World Literature the Heart of America
Sabit Madaliev
Sabit Madaliev is the author of fourteen books of poetry and fiction, published in the USSR and his native Uzbekistan. His most recent collections employ the Sufi verse form of rubaiyat, which has Persian, Turkish, and Arabic roots. Yet by writing these in Russian, he taps into the rich tradition of Russian-language poetry as well, making his work a complex and intriguing hybrid. The Silence of the Sufi is his first full-length prose work. Madaliev lives in Tashkent with his wife and family.

Russell Scott Valentino's translations include Materada, the 1960 inaugural novel of Istrian writer Fulvio Tomizza, Carlo Michelstaedter's hauntingly enigmatic philosophical treatise of 1910 Persuasion and Rhetoric, Predrag Matvejevic's work between worlds Between Exile and Asylum: An Eastern Epistolary, and, by the same author The Other Venice. His translations have received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Howard Foundation, and the US Department of Education. He teaches in the Translation Workshop at the University of Iowa.
